How To Stop Your Gums From Bleeding

Posted on

Having bleeding gums is not only a frustrating thing to experience, but it can be embarrassing if it happens in front of other people. If you have ever bit into an apple and noticed a small amount of blood on the apple, you will know exactly how embarrassing it can be. Luckily, there are many things you can do to prevent your gums from bleeding, or at least reduce how often this happens.

Visit the Dentist

That's right, you knew this was coming. Bleeding gums is not something that should be considered normal, and it doesn't affect everyone. If your gums bleed at random times throughout the day, it is a sign of gum disease. You need to visit your dentist for an exam, professional cleaning, and x-rays. They will let you know if you are developing gingivitis and how best to treat it. If it has advanced to periodontal disease, you may need to get treatment from a periodontist.

Brush Gently

If your gums bleed after you brush your teeth, and you don't have gum disease, then it is probably from brushing too hard. You should use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and only apply a moderate amount of pressure. There is no reason your toothbrush should look like it was chewed on after having it for only a month or two. This is a sign that you are brushing too hard and too vigorously. If this keeps happening, ask your dentist to show you the proper pressure and technique for brushing your teeth and avoiding having your gums bleed in the process.

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

Like so many other things, what you eat on a daily basis can affect your gum and oral health. It is important that you eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Bleeding gums may be a sign of a vitamin deficiency, so be sure you get the daily required vitamins. The best way to do this is by focusing on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and choosing foods from all the major food groups.

Get Treatment for Medical Conditions

There are a variety of medical conditions that can lead to bleeding gums. By getting treatment for these conditions, you will be able to reduce how often your gums bleed. For example, bleeding and clotting disorders are known to cause bleeding gums. You should also get treatment for diabetes, mouth sores, and heart disease. If you have bleeding gums, it might also be from the medications you take. Discuss that with your dentist, as they may be able to recommend an alternative medication.
